How to Pick Strawberries

Only pick ripe strawberries! Strawberries do not ripen after they have been picked.

A ripe strawberry is a fully red color all the way around the berry with no white or green spots.

Please be sure to pick all of the ripe berries! Picking the strawberry plants clean helps keep our crops in good condition and makes for a longer strawberry season.

When picking a strawberry, grasp the stem between your forefinger and thumbnail, then lightly pull and twist at the same time. The berry should separate from the plant, stem and all.

We measure our berries by the pound and provide flats for you to pick into. Our scales are tared for our flats so we prefer that you pick into our containers so that you don’t get charged extra for the container! Flats also distribute the weight of the berries and keep them in a shallow layer so that they don’t get squished. Our current price per pound can be found here.

Keep your berries out of the sun and as cool as possible on your way home and place them in the fridge as soon as you get home. They store best in the fridge very lightly covered with plastic wrap. Do not wash them until you are ready to eat them as excess moisture will cause them to spoil faster.

Strawberries freeze well and freezing them is a great way to enjoy your berries all year-round! You can find our guide to freezing strawberries here.
